STOP FEMICID
Research project, since 2020

Project launched to name and prevent femicides.

There were 21 femicides in Switzerland in 2024. Every week, a woman survives an attempted femicide by her husband, partner, ex-partner, brother or son.Femicides are not isolated cases in Switzerland either, but the result of structural violence, the starting point of which lies in the patriarchal power relations of our society.Violence against women is (too) often still treated as a private matter and this harrowing and complex issue is surrounded by social speechlessness. Media coverage often focuses on the most extreme cases or prominent personalities, while the multitude of stories remain in the background. The media have a great responsibility in how they report and portray violence against women and femicide. If they do it right, this is already prevention.

The Swiss research project STOP FEMICIDE calls for naming femicides as such. The project initiators Nadia Brügger, Sylke Gruhnwald and Pauline Martinet want to create more awareness about femicides – through documentation, research and education – and have developed a media guide on how to report about femicides. I created the pictures for it.
